What to expect...

A good friend of mine just found out that she's pregnant (no, not me) and I was wondering if someone(s) could recommend a what to expect while you're expecting type of book. I'd like to buy it for her as a gift. You wonderful moms who frequent this blog seem well-informed in these areas...

Comments:
I would definitely recommend "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" by Dr. Glade Be Curtis and Judith Schuler.

I like it much better than the "What to Expect" book. This is because it gives you info every single week instead of just every month. I think the most recent edition is the 5th edition. It is published by "LIFELONG books" (a company I have never otherwise heard of).

Hope this is helpful. Oh, and I would also recommend the book "Baby 411" as a gift to new Moms. It covers everything from feeding, pooping (yes, an entire chapter...who knew there could be so much to know about baby poo), and sleeping to infections and other illnesses and when to take your little one to the doctor. FANTASTIC! I took it with me every time I traveled with Aidan for at least the first 6 months. It was so incredibly informative and yet laid-back.

Oh, and my third always recommended book is "Baby Bargains". It helped me save so very much money. The best thing about it is that it can help you know what you really need (as opposed to what stores salesmen will tell you that you need). It was a very handy reference to have when I registered. I felt much more equipped to do it and much less overwhelmed.

I really like "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears because it talks about pregnancy and birth some but also breastfeeding and baby care and all sorts of things related to babies :o)

I do prefer Your Pregnancy Week by Week to What to Expect and I think Baby Bargains is AWESOME!

well, it feels so long since i had a bubba.
my fave book when i had my first baby was penelope leach's baby and child..
it has beautiful pictures, and really connects momma with her instinctual mothering vibe :o)
i love dr sears too.

I've heard friends say the week by week book is better than the "expecting" book, too! :)

I re-recommend all of Kellsey's recommendations. Sometimes, you can find the Pregnancy week-by-week packaged with the Baby's first year week-by-week, so that's fun. Kells sent me Baby Bargains when she found out I was pregnant, and it helped us make a lot of decisions. Now I use Baby 411 as a reference.

I also liked The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy. I actually learned about some things, and it's humorous.

also, who's pregnant?

I am not a fan of all the "What to expect" books, except "What to Expect the First Year". It was the best book for me. It gave me insight into my pregnancy, what to expect in the hospital and then was a great resource for many things we encountered the first year. I would recommend it to anyone who is pregnant.

I recommend -

*"The Natural Pregnancy Book"by Aviva Jill Romm

*"The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth"by Henci Goer

*and anything by Ina May Gaskin

Thanks, y'all!! I'm going to check those out and get one for her asap.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner...husband and I just returned from a 2 day camping trip in New Hampshire.

I had a Pregnancy Week by Week calendar that I loved - so I'd recommend anything with that much detail.

I have to also recommend Anne Lammott's Operating Instructions - that really prepared me for the post-birth nutsyness that I experienced...

and for those not prone to paranoia, Having Faith, an Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood by Susan Steingraber (EXCELLENT book, but sent a sensitive friend over the edge a bit)
